Henshin Ninja Arashi
1972Set in the Edo Period of Japan, the series follows a young ninja named Hayate, who is the son of a man who developed a special technique called the "Transformation Jutsu" capable of granting a superhuman form. However, their Ninja clan, the warmongering Blood Wheel Clan, begins using the Transformation Jutsu to spread fear and terror all throughout Japan as part of their campaign to conquer it, going against the peaceful intentions Hayate's father had when creating it. After the Blood Wheel Clan slaughter a village, Hayate is able to convince his initially reluctant father to perform the transformation procedure on him, enabling him to become a birdman ninja known as "Arashi" to defend people from the Blood Wheel Clan. Hayate's father is later murdered by the Blood Wheel Clan when they discover his betrayal, but Hayate himself escapes and teams up with the Iga Clan to fight and keep the Blood Wheel Clan from taking over Japan.

Ooku
2003The mini-series revolves around the harem of a shogun in the Edo Period in Japan. The women jostle and compete with one another and with their lord and on occasion even wield more power than their master.

Toshiie and Matsu
2002The 41st NHK Taiga Drama is Toshiie to Matsu. During the turbulent Warring States Era, one man's life and career intertwined with the three great generals of Japanese history-Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu. With political savvy and the support of his fiercely loyal wife, Maeda Toshiie rose to second in power in the shogunate and built up a fiefdom that encompassed Echizen, Noto and Kaga.

Oichi Fushigi Gatari
2024The story is set in Edo's Fukagawa district, where the heroine, Oichi, dreams of becoming a doctor and assists her father, a physician named Shōan. Oichi possesses a special ability: she can hear the "voices" and see the "figures" of those who have passed away with unresolved regrets. Burning Flower

Ranzan: The Wild Physician
1995A doctor whose mission is to save lives stands up for the weak in the midst of suffering and cuts down the evil that is the disease of the human world. Teruhiko Saigo plays the main character Arashiyama, who was born into the family of the Shogun's official doctor, but joined the Hayashi family as a son-in-law to save more people, and Azusa Watanabe plays his wife Misa, who is also a doctor.

Ooku: The Beginning
2012During the reign of the shogun, Iemitsu, an epidemic causes the population of men to greatly drop, leading to an ooku where the role of men and women are reversed. Thus, “the women become the shogun, served by 3000 handsome men”

Matsudaira Ukon Jikencho
1982In this gripping period drama, Matsudaira Ukon, the younger brother of the 11th Tokugawa Shogun Ienari, lives in the city as Yabutaro, a doctor in the Ukiyo Koji district, while fighting the evil that has infested the city of Edo.

Akinai Seiden: Kin to Gin

Takeda Shingen

Notes on Tokugawa Villainies
1992Matsudaira Tadateru (Shin'ichi Chiba) the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu that was stripped of his title and began life under an assumed name in the Red Light district of Edo. He solves crimes, heals the sick, saves the Geisha from evil Samurai and along the way he teams up with Yagyu Jubei (a role played numerous times by Chiba himself). Awesome Samurai Action.
